The type of personal information we collect

We currently collect and process the following information:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Date of birth
  • School
  • City
  • Country
  • How they get to/from school
  • Gender
  • Location data
  • Photos (within the app, students have the ability to take photographs of roads that they are concerned about. While the primary focus is about the road, we cannot audit all photographs such that photos may contain images of the children. To ensure anonymity, faces are blurred in the images. However, these photos can only be seen by the student who took the photograph, moderators and the YEA administrator. Moderators will conduct sample auditing of the photos and comments to check for inappropriate content and use. iRAP will only approve users who are qualified as moderators.)
How we get the personal information and why we have it

Most of the personal information we process is provided to us directly by you for one of the following reasons:

  • Users will be able to report areas of concern from a road safety aspect by pinning a location on the map, making comments, and uploading a photo. The location of the pins (lat/long) is recorded during the pin process. Users can use their current location to pin. or select a place in the map unrelated to the GPS position.
  • Name and email are used for the registration process.
  • Users also need to provide country, city and school. This information will be used to associate the pins included by the user to the schools. The pins will help to understand the locations around the schools where users feel unsafe. A detailed road safety assessment will be conducted in these locations to improve infrastructure and increase safety for the students (SR4S). The pins will also provide a road safety perception map for the city/country. Students can use this information to advocate for safer roads. In the ‘statistics page’ on the app, the user will be able to filter the statistics (total pins and perception per transport mode) per city or country.
  • Date of birth, gender, and how they get to/from school are used to conduct further analysis by age range and for us to advice for policy makers so that they can promote more sustainable and safe transport modes.
We also receive personal information indirectly, from the following sources in the following scenarios:
  • Parents' consent will be collected separately from the app. Users from 13 to 18 years old must provide their parents/guardians' emails. Parents/guardians must consent to the app's terms and policies to approve the children's registration. Users under 13 years old are not allowed to use this application.
We use the information that you have given us in order to
  • Control access to the app (email)
  • Manage users’ system (name and email)
  • Conduct analysis to help local authorities to increase road safety (country, city, school, locations, travel information - how they get to/from school)
  • Conduct academic studies to understand road safety perception (based on date of birth, gender, locations)

We may share the location of the pins with local authorities and partner organizations with the purpose of helping to advocate and take action on road safety. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the lawful bases we rely on for processing this information are:

Your consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting [us by email at yea@starratingforschools.org]
